It’s Sunday evening. Tomorrow’s the big day: the beginning of your new diet, the start of working towards a healthier lifestyle.

Is it time to splurge or time to let the diet kick in early?

Splurge, of course! You proudly lay out on your kitchen counter: homemade fettuccine alfredo, pepperoni & sausage Stromboli, breadsticks, and a salad drowning in Caesar dressing with extra croutons. You call the kids down and are excited for one final no-holds-barred meal.

“Here’s to a healthier me!” you say as you dig in, fork diving into the fettuccine. It’s too bad you have to say goodbye to so many good things for sake of losing some weight.

Good things that hours later have you tossing and turning in bed, sick to the stomach and sweating profusely.

Good things that have you stumbling downstairs in the morning half-awake, reaching for an extra cup of coffee before  leaving for work, trying to halt  your eye twitching while rattling your body awake, despite its twofold labor last night.

Good things that convince you the benefits of an empty stomach come lunch-time.

Good things that have your diet over by noon.

Defeated and embarrassed, at the end of the day, you ask yourself: why is it so hard to overcome these obstacles? Why can’t it be easy to eat right?

When it comes to procrastination, we miss the truth that it in itself is hard to do. Eating healthy or being productive might have the appearance of stress and anxiety, but procrastination is what kills us. It takes every bit of our energy to refuse doing what we believe in for something we know only keeps us second-guessing ourselves and second best to ourselves.

Procrastination affects all of us to difference degrees. In its worst form, it is a serious problem of self-regulation that is <strong><em>learned</em></strong>. Procrastinators look for ways to avoid challenges or commitments, lying to themselves about the worthiness rising up will bring. Denying those very challenges and commitments will ultimately cheat you from leading a better and bigger life.

It’s easy to eat healthy, to brainstorm new ideas for your business, when you see the reality of what procrastination brings you. If your heart, not your body or mind, desires something good, don’t convince yourself it’s better for you to drown in your anxiety than to flourish in your passion.
